Panama New Years traditions – Muñeco

Filed under: Panama, Photography, events — Capn Scott @ 12:15 pm

It is a tradition in Panama to make an effigy to a well known person and either fill it with fireworks, or throw it into the fire on New Year’s eve.  Through the burning or, more fun, the explosions, they release the bad feelings that the old year contained, along with the old year.

Three guesses as to who this is…  and the first two don’t count…

That’s alot of bad spirits…  At first, I thought it was a family waiting for the bus…

These seemed to be more popular in the province of Chame along the Pan-American Highway.

Definitely an interesting tradition and one that you won’t see in any other country…

Dude, where’s my car??? I think it’s under all that snow…

Filed under: Pennsylvania, Photography, events — Capn Scott @ 1:12 pm

Pretty healthy snow storm over the last day.  Somewhere around 22″ of snow.  One question…

Is my truck under all of that???  All I can say is…  I’ll be home (David, Panama)  for Christmas, if only for a week.  It’ll be so nice to get back.  It’s been almost a year and a half since I’ve been back.  Meanwhile, this is a clever diversion…

Out in the corn fields of the midwest…

Filed under: Photography, events, landscape — Capn Scott @ 10:41 am

What would Capn Scott be doing out in the corn fields of the midwest??? Why, taking pictures, of course. The smell of freshly mown fields, diesel engines, the sounds of heavy equipment (insert Tim “The Toolman” Taylor’s monkey grunt here)… I even got a chance to ride in the 8 wheel articulated tractor…
These guys were as friendly as could be. And the pictures speak for themselves.

The day was gorgeous.  But the next day was going to be rain again.  So, these guys are working against the clock.

One harvester running at full speed.

Keeping two tractors hauling grain to the trucks parked alongside the road.

Working the full day into the evening…

Cutting and hauling.

Into the evening.  Good thing they have lots of lights.

These guys worked hard all day and into the night to get the corn out of the field.

An enjoyable day spent with a great group of guys.  And got some great shots as well…

Jacksonville Zoo with the Jacksonville Photography Meetup Group

Filed under: Florida, Photography, events, landscape, nature — Capn Scott @ 8:05 pm

Got a chance to shoot with a great group of photographers.

I’ve lived in Jacksonville for many years and this is my first time at the zoo.  The zoo is across the river from me and daily I hear the train and the monkeys at feeding time.

They also have a great exhibition of many flowering trees and shrubs.

Pink Flamingos…  This is Florida…

Some kind of ritual…

The coy in the Japanese Garden…

Stunning Iris in the Japanese Garden.

The new Komodo Dragon exhibition.  Now that’s a big lizard…

More beautiful flowers…

Did I say how much I like shooting flowers?

Stunning Japanese Plum…

More and more…  there were so many flowers in bloom…

This was a fun group of shooters.  Everyone enjoyed themselves and got some great shots.

Photography Tours and Workshops

Filed under: Photography, architecture, events, landscape, models, nature — Capn Scott @ 7:06 pm

I’ve begun to put together a website promoting photography tours and workshops.  It will feature some of my favorite places, in which, I will lead photography tours.  It will also include others tours and workshops from all around the world.

I’m using a graphical interface and also a calendar interface.  Hopefully this will get more people out shooting around the world.  This is still a work in progress, and any recommendations would be greatly appreciated…

Jacksonville boat parade and fireworks

Filed under: Florida, Photography, events — Capn Scott @ 10:36 pm

Every year, the weekend after Thanksgiving, there is a lighted boat parade. It’s very interesting to see how creative people can get with boats and christmas lights.

Very cool viking ship.

Then afterwards, there is a great fireworks display…

I need to learn the bulb mode using the hat trick…  I think I can get better results with that…

Everyone enjoyed the boat show and the fireworks display afterwords.
